About
I’m a full-time photographer based in the beautiful village of Firle, Sussex, drawn to nature, landscapes, communities and the stories that surround me. Much of my commissioned work is rooted locally, capturing people and places close to home, from portraits and events to the ever-changing South Downs. I also run photography workshops and give talks to camera clubs throughout the year.
Whether photographing for clients or for myself, I approach each scene with curiosity and patience, seeking moments that reveal character: bold colours, unusual textures, fleeting light or subtle movement. I often work with natural light, favouring the soft glow of dawn or dusk, and am especially drawn to unusual weather that transforms familiar landscapes.
Alongside commissioned work, I’m developing personal projects that explore our connection to the land. My current project, Chalklands, investigates the chalk landscapes of the South Downs through sculpturally manipulated prints that emphasise the region’s texture, importance and fragility. Previous projects include The Character of Trees, a study of individual trees through multiple exposures, and Land Art, a series of experimental site-based works using found natural materials to make temporary visual statements.
Photography is a constant thread through my life, and it has led me to notice details I might otherwise overlook. When not behind the camera, I can usually be found exploring the Downs with my wife and twin boys, sea swimming, or simply watching the light change across the hills.

“James is an unassuming and modest man, but he is a hugely talented photographer who taught us things in a few hours that would have taken years of study to learn. I definitely have a much better grasp of what I can do with my camera than I ever had before.”

“I did the Birling Gap and Seven Sisters walk with James, and enjoyed the experience immensely. James is extremely patient, and he knows where all the best photography spots are at. I would encourage anyone who finds themselves in that part of England to book a photography walk with James.

Ron Ekins - Review after receiving Voucher - Seaford Head - Sussex
*****
“I spent a great afternoon with James on a photographic walk around Seaford Head. James provided hands-on instructions on the use of my camera, advice on the composition of pictures, and shared his wide knowledge of photography. I would definitely recommend James' experiences and plan to look into some of his other photographic walk destinations.”

“In a relaxed manner, James suggested different photo compositions throughout the session. He also encouraged me to shoot in manual mode which previously I had little experience of. I found this of great help.
I now have a selection of photos which I am very pleased with which would not have been possible without James suggestions and encouragement.
Thank you James for a great time.”
